Education - Introduction

IBSA identified education as a powerful instrument for achieving the goals of social equality and inclusion. An IBSA Joint Working Group (JWG) on Education was formed to further these goals. The first meeting of JWG on Education was held in New Delhi on 3 March 2004. Last meeting of JWG on Education was held in Kwazulu–Natal, South Africa on 13 October 2011.

The key themes of cooperation under JWG on Education are –

  • Three broad areas of cooperation have been identified - open and distance education, higher and professional education and universal mass education
  • Sub-sectors under education have been identified - Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Biotechnology, Sustainable Development, Social Transformation, Empowerment and Higher Education Studies
  • Study Programme at Higher Education Institutes - A Centre for South African & Brazilian Studies established in Aligarh Muslim University, India in October 2011
  • Financing of Higher Education
  • Programs of exchange of faculty members
  • Use of ICT in education
  • IPR & WIPO related issues

A Trilateral MoU on cooperation in the field of Higher Education was signed in Pretoria on 17 October 2007 during the second IBSA Summit.
