Social Development - Introduction


JOINT WORKING GROUP (JWG) ON SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT


A Joint Working Group (JWG) was created to explore the potential of cooperation in the area of social development with a view to promote social and economic development and strengthen South-South cooperation. The last meeting of JWG on Social Development was held in Rio de Janeiro on 14-15 July 2009.


The issues covered under JWG are -

  • Poverty eradication;

  • social security;

  • social policy;

  • monitoring and evaluation;

  • institutional capacity building;

  • micro-finance; and

  • Co-operation in multilateral fora.


An IBSA MoU on cooperation in the field of Social Development was signed during the 2nd IBSA Summit in Pretoria on 17 October 2007. The MoU focuses on exchange of visits, sharing of information and experience through publications, workshops, seminars, conferences and video conferences; exchange of experts to deliver lectures, build capacity and undertake joint comparative research; exchange of study tours; promotion of civil society co-operation within the three countries; mentorships and exchange programmes to facilitate skills transfer; human resource development and training of officials, civil society representatives and academics; cooperation between training institutes of IBSA Countries; and establishment of joint institutions, projects and other joint mechanisms.
